Fatal Fever: Tracking Down Typhoid Mary — a non-fiction you should read !

Fatal Fever: Tracking Down Typhoid Mary written by Gail Jarrow is a 5-star book you should read!

This non-fiction tells us about a terrible epidemic in the 19th century, typhoid. During that time, medical technology is still underdeveloped, so doctors think it does not differ from a normal fever. People already got infected before they prevent it. Also, people were not cautious about their personal hygiene, rivers were polluted with sewage flowing in it. The theme of this book is the government should pay special attention to diseases and support patients. In the book, the author mentioned a lot of awful consequences that the negligence of the government had brought. They let private water companies that were bad at managing the water supplies to take care of the river. Most importantly, they did not want to pay the massive fee to clean the city.

I really recommend this book to you because it is really similar to the situation we were fighting against. This is also an interesting book. Reading this book never makes me bored.

Do the boxers deserve a bad rap?

The Boxers do not deserve a bad rap because they are just ordinary people who wanted to protect their country. During the boxer rebellion, Shandong experienced a drought. Villagers thought it was the Church, The highest building had angered the god, so they burnt it. The boxers did this because their culture and religion had forced them. This is only a way to protect their country. Boxers killed foreigners and Chinese related to Christian because the foreigners had done unacceptable things to China long before the opium war.  The British had sold drugs to China, forced China to trade with them, and signed unequal treaties. The most important point, America sent missionaries to China, they wanted to convert Chinese culture and religion, trying to “make it a better place”. A country’s culture cannot be easily changed. This angered the boxers. This is also an act to protect China from other countries. Therefore, boxers do not deserve a bad reputation.

A Mid Summer Night’s Dream — Egeus

I think Egeus is a stubborn and cruel Dad. “I would my father look’d but with my eyes.” said Hermia (Shakespeare scene 1) Even though his daughter was in love with Lysander, he forced Hermia to marry Demetrius. Hermia was sad but she couldn’t disobey her father’s words. She really hoped that Egeus could listen and understand her. From this sentence, we can see the disappointment of Hermia to Egeus. Also, Egeus had said:”As she is mine, I may dispose her: Which shall be either to this gentleman or to her death, according to our law immediately provided in this case.” He is very cruel and he wanted to kill his daughter if she doesn’t marry Demetrius.

The Aged Mother — Theme CER summative

Cruel governors used to make unreasonable laws, but citizens cannot fight against it. One of a Japanese cruel law in the olden days was that people who were too old will be abandoned from provinces and led into the mountains.  In the story The Aged Mother, a poor farmer’s old mother was forced to be abandoned on the mountain. The steep mountain roads are full of dangerous beasts and there are no supplies for daily life, people can lose their lives easily, especially old people. As a mother’s child, he couldn’t bear to leave his mother alone in the mountains. Although the son was afraid that governors will punish them, he hid his mother in a hut in the valley. There were difficulties that obstruct them from quiet lives but through wisdom and their trust on each other, they were able to solve the problems.

In the story, The Aged Mother, by Matsuo Bashoells, the author believes that we should always take care and love our parents no matter what happens because they had done the same too. When the mother and son were heading to the mountain of the “abandoning of the aged”, “The eyes of the old mother were not so dim but that they noted the reckless hastening from one path to another, and her loving heart grew anxious. Her son did not know the mountain’s many paths and his return might be one of danger.” (Bashoells 1) During their journey, the old mother started worrying her son since he did not know the way back, so she made marking with the branches every few steps. Even though, the old mother knew she will be closer to death every step her son walks, she was always caring and worried about her son every single second. On the other side, the son loved her mother too. When he was leaving, his mother gave him her last advice. His heart broke when he saw the old and shriveled hands of his mother, “he cried aloud: “oh, Honorable mother, your kindness breaks my heart! I will not leave you. Together we will follow the path of twigs, and together we will die!”(Bashoells 1) When the son saw his mother’s hand, he seemed to see the sacrifice and selfless love of his mother through it. Therefore, he decided to hide and take care of his mother recklessly. Between love and laws, he chose love. Love is a two-way path; it needs people to trust and care for each other. As time passes, the government sent out an order that every citizen should give him a rope of ashes. To solve the problem, the old women said: “Stretch it upon a row of flat stones and burn it on a windless night.” He called the people together and did as she said and when the blaze died down, there upon the stones, with every twist and fiber showing perfectly, lay a rope of ashes.” (Bashoells 1) The government had again given cruel laws, citizens need to present him with ropes of ashes. The son was worried since the old mother didn’t die and they were not able to make a rope of ashes. The wise mother then gave a suggestion to make a fake rope. They never knew if the government will find out but he believed the experience from her mother, he believed her wisdom, he knew his old mother won’t hurt him.

Product Design — door decoration

Our last project is to decorate a door for Ms Yu using Chinese style elements.

My biggest success was we finished the door decoration on time but if we had more we could make it more delicate. Skills that I learned or developed were  how to organize my work better, so we could gain more time. If I did this again, one thing I would do differently is to use rich designs. One piece of advice I would give a future student doing this project is not to think things so difficult, you won’t have time to finish it.Overall, I think this product was successful because we finished it.

This is our door decoration and our design sketches.
