EMOTIONS – Percy Jackson’s problem managing them

Andrew Fang

Have you ever gotten so mad at something, that you lose control of your body? That is what happens to a person named Percy Jackson. He has problems managing his emotions, and once he gets mad, he loses control. At this state, he isn’t even aware of his actions. But even though there are many ways to solve this problem, he still hasn’t thought about them before.

About Percy:

In the novel Percy Jackson and The Lightning Thief Percy Jackson is a twelve year old boy in sixth grade studying at Yancy Academy, a school for troubled kids. He has a mother named Sally, and he is forced to endure a rude step-father, as his own father is not known to him yet.In the beginning of  The Lightning Thief, he has one friend, Grover. In the first 3 chapters, Grover is Percy’s only confident friend and Percy feels that no one else really likes him.

His problems with emotions, actions, and words:

He also has problems controlling his emotions and actions. These traits are shown many times throughout the book. For instance, when he went to the museum with the class, he said “Will you shut up?” Louder than he thought it would come out, which is an example of how he can’t control his actions. Another example is on Page 9, Paragraph 5, where he loses control of everything.

“But I was so mad my mind went blank. A wave roared in my ears. I don’t remember touching her, but the next thing I knew, Nancy was sitting on her butt in the fountain, screaming, ‘Percy pushed me!”

Another case of this problem is on Page 17, Paragraph 3, where he says something that he doesn’t even know what it means.

“Finally, when our English teacher, Mr. Nicoll, asked me for the millionth time why I was too lazy to study for spelling tests, I snapped. I called him an old sot. I wasn’t even sure what it meant, but it sounded good.”

Ways to solve his problem:

Is there a solution? Yes, of course there is. Some of which may help him a lot, not just with his emotions.

According to skillsyouneed.com, in their article Recognizing and Managing Emotions, there are many different ways to help manage emotions.

  1. Exercise: Exercise can release reward and pleasure chemicals in the brain to let us feel better.
  2. Be kind to others: This can help you stop worrying about yourself.
  3. Be open and accept what is going on around you: you should learn to appreciate what is happening and avoid excessive criticism during situations.
  4. Don’t give in to negative thinking: When you happen to be thinking about negative things, challenge them against them.

These are just a few, but there are many more things he could do to help him.

Percy Jackson is a very unique character. He has a lot of emotional problems, but he ends up being a hero to everyone at the end of the story instead. Despite his Dyslexia, ADHD, and problems managing his emotions, he was still brave enough to finish the quest and go back to half-blood hill alive, which is amazing. And even though he is a troubled kid, what do you think about him?
