Smell Detector Prototype

For the new unit, Mr. Layman presented us with a very different challenge: Build a prototype of something that detects smell.  We later analyzed a series a handheld products such as the temperature gun, a old phone etc… Some classes after that, we created a design sketch to start create a final model. My product is based on a phone and a game controller. My has a filter that takes in the smell and then a in-built  smell catalog (in the phone) will scrutinize the smell and then will show results.

Lightbox Refleection

In design class, we are making a Lightbox since during COVID-19, we could not travel, so we made a location that we missed. I chose the Izmir clock tower in Turkey since this is where my Grandmother lives. During the process of making the Lightbox I learned how to use Adobe Illustrator and I was fascinated by the laser cutting machine. One change I would like to make is to make the box bigger. One thing I am looking forward to is lighting the box at night since there are LED’s in the box.

Informative Post Percy’s Choices and how that impacts him

Making the right choice is a challenge to us all. Imagine not being able to control emotions, having trouble in school, and not having a lot of friends. That’s what Percy Jackson lives day by day.  Percy has a positive relationship with his mom the only caring person in his life and that is a very good for him. His ADHD impacts a big part of his life, as paying attention and managing emotions is also a challenge. There are many ways Percy could improve but there is little attention payed to this matter.

Percy does not have a lot of positive relationships with his fellow classmates and teachers, but he has deep relationships [mostly] when comes to family matters. His mom is one of the most important people in his life as stated on pg.32-33 “My Mother can make me feel good just by just walking into the room”. This is approved in the quote from the article “Why Personal relationships are Important”. In the article it is stated that “A review of 148 studies found that people with strong social relationships where 50% leads likely to die prematurely”. His best friend is Grover and that is confirmed on pg.3 –“Grover tried to calm me down”. The article also says that “The support offered by a caring friend can provide a buffer against stress” and that is exactly what Grover does for Percy. Grover is a very loyal friend to Percy and is willing to get detention if that means protecting Percy. Having no friends could impact Percy later on in his life is that he could get depression when he is old as explained later on in the article. A recommendation to Percy would be to be more socially active [maybe on social media] and make friends.


ADHD impacts Percy’s choices as he gets easily distracted and struggles to control what he says. According to the Article “Neurodiversity: A different view of the brain”, “getting easily distracted” is a symptom of ADHD. In page 2 of the Book “Percy Jackson and the Lightning thief” Percy states “I sort of hit the wrong lever on the [waterpark] catwalk and our class took an unplanned swim”. It tells you that he screwed up when the others were having fun. The Article quoted earlier also states that “Blurting out answers in class is also a symptom [of ADHD]”. Percy also blurts out a lot. At some occasions, he can’t control what he has to say which relates to him not being able to control emotions. But what can be done to Percy? In the Neurodiversity article, people with ADHD are recommended to be outdoors and be in a stimulating environment. Teachers could help him by letting him study outdoors and guide him by his interests.  For example, if Percy is interested in Formula 1, in math class, the teacher could say “give an example of how math is used in Formula 1”. In conclusion, Percy gets easily distracted and struggles to control what he says but there are a lot of things that Percy and his teachers could do to improve Percy’s behavior.  ­­­­­­


Percy’s attitude towards school is mostly negative as he does not have good relationship with anyone. But even Mr. Brunner has his expectations about Percy as stated in pg.2: “[Mr. Brunner] was the only teacher whose class didn’t put me to sleep. But he expected me to be good as anyone else, despite the fact that I have dyslexia and attention deficit disorder and I never had made above a C- in my life”.  He gets bullied a lot by Nancy Bobofit and her friends and he can’t do anything as he is on probation. He also gets irritated very easily at sometimes and uses violence as a response as explained in pg.17 “My grades slipped from Ds to Fs. I got into more fights with Nancy Bobofit and her friends and I was sent out to the hallway almost in every class”. In the article “Is violence a symptom of ADHD” it says that ” ADHD could cause violence among the people who have it”. Percy could count to ten as “the school counselor told him” or could have a stress ball to calm him down. In school, he could explain the teachers about how ADHD affects him, and they could find a solution/s together.


In Conclusion, Percy lives through a lot of difficulties and challenges in school and at home. His ADHD is the major obstacle in the path of his life, but his positive relationships make him a good and friendly person.
