How does making good choices impact Percy and his community? 

 

“ADHD is not about knowing about what to do but doing about what one knows.”  Says Russel Barkley. This shows that ADHD is not about what to do it’s about who you are. For example, Percy’s choices are impacted by ADHD, because it makes him distracted at school. ADHD also impacts Percy’s attitude toward school and his study habits. However, managing emotions also impacts Percy making good choices for himself and his community.  This all impacts Percy and his good choices because he is very impulsive, and he does not think before he does something.  

ADHD impacts Percy’s choices because he gets easily distracted at school. On-Page 5 Percy says “Nancy Bobofit snickers something about the naked guy on the stele, and I turned around and said, will you shut up? It came out louder than I meant it to.” This shows that Percy does not think before he says something. In addition, the article Neurodiversity: A different view of ADHD states that “Getting easily distracted and avoiding activities that require focus are also symptoms.” This shows that Percy does have ADHD because he gets distracted easily and is very impulsive.  Percy also states “See bad things happen to me on field trips. Like at my fifth-grade school, when we went to the Saratoga battlefield, I had this accident with a Revolutionary Cannon.  This relates to the article when it says, “Symptoms often include losing items, not paying attention to details or making careless mistakes in school.” Additionally, ADHD impacts Percy and his choices because he does not pay attention to school and makes careless mistakes. An advice that I will give Percy is to go outdoors and move his body around. Another piece of advice from the article is that “They respond well to change – and to being asked for new ideas.” Therefore, Percy should tell his teacher to let him go outside and to be asked for new ideas. ADHD impacts Percy’s goof choices because he is very impulsive.  

On the other hand, ADHD also impacts Percy’s Attitude toward school and his study habits. Percy says on Page 17 “My grades slipped from Ds to Fs” This shows that Percy does not have good study habits, additionally he also does not care about his grades. Also, on page 38 Percy says “What was so great about me? A dyslexic, hyperactive boy with a D+ report card, kicked out of school for the sixth time in six years” This also shows that Percy does not have a good attitude towards school, Percy is hyperactive because he has ADHD. However, the article How to Focus on studying by Kelly Roell Updated on June 24, 2019, says, “We’ve all struggled with poorly-timed distractions.” This shows that Percy is not the only one that has bad study habits and not the only one who has bad grades. My advice for Percy is to pick a good place and a good time to study. Another advice is to Review and Revise quiz, for example making your study quiz to study more. As a result, Percy’s attitude toward school is impacted by ADHD.  

Thirdly, managing emotions also impacts Percy making good choices for himself and his community. For example, Percy says “Count to ten, get control of your temper. But I was so mad my mind went blank” This shows that Percy can’t control his temper. Another time when he could not control his emotions was on page 17 ” Finally, when our English teacher, Mr. Nicoll asked me for the millionth time why I was too lazy to study for spelling tests, I snapped I called him an old sot.” He should control himself when he is feeling cranky and irritable. For example, the article Recognizing and managing emotions states “Emotions are not consciously controlled.” This shows that Percy sometimes just can’t control his emotions. My advice to Percy is to make decisions with emotions, for example, the article states that “The best decisions are made using both logic and emotions.” Therefore, it is okay to have times that Percy feels angry, but he must use his logic as well before doing something. Nevertheless, Percy’s emotions impact both Percy and his community.  

In conclusion, Percy’s life is impacted by ADHD, positive relationships, and managing his emotions. Nevertheless, Percy’s choices also impact Percy’s community his mom, Mr. Brunner, and Grover. As a result, Percy and his community are impacted by Percy’s Relationships, emotions, and his ADHD.
